Sugar has linked to some types of cancer, including breast cancer, but new research indicates that the consumption of sugar may not only cause cancer, but accelerate its growth and destruction of the body.
The chances of an individual getting breast cancer were found to be much higher when the individual consumed high levels of fructose – a type of sugar. This, of course, was especially worrisome to researchers in the West, where diets are extremely high in sugar compared to other places in the world. According to a study utilizing mice, about 30 percent of those studied that were not on a heavy sugar diet contracted mammary tumors, compared to 50 to 58 percent that contracted the cancer while on a diet heavy in sugar.
The new study conducted at the MD Anderson Center at the University of Texas, however, states that the problems with sugar and cancer don’t end there. The popular notion was that, once you have the cancer caused by something like sugar, further intake of the substance won’t continue to make a difference. However, the new sugar research indicates that further consumption of sugar once you have a cancer related to the substance will accelerate the disease’s scourge on the body.
The primary reason for sugar’s continued effect on the cancer-ridden body is because of a metabolic process called 12-LOX. This process is a major component of how cancer metastasizes – or spreads – throughout the body. According to the researchers, when they conducted their experiments on the mice, the ones they continued to feed diets high in sugar to once they’d contracted cancer died much quicker as a result. The scientists have come to the realization that sugar actually feeds the 12-LOX process which helps cancer metastasize. In other words, sugar feeds the cancer process.
Lorenzo Cohen, a professor who was a co-author of the new study, spoke about the cancer and sugar research.
“We determined that it was specifically fructose, in table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, ubiquitous within our food system, which was responsible for facilitating lung metastasis and 12-HETE production in breast tumors.”
Another co-author of the study, Dr. Peiying Yang, an assistant professor of Palliative, Rehabilitation, and Integrative Medicine talked about how the study might point cancer research in a new direction.
“Prior research has examined the role of sugar, especially glucose, and energy-based metabolic pathways in cancer development. However, the inflammatory cascade may be an alternative route of studying sugar-driven carcinogenesis that warrants further study.”
Sugar is extremely prevalent in Western diets. So much so that it is practically impossible to avoid. Of course, some foods are obviously filled with sugar and are simple to avoid. Foods like candy, chocolate, cakes, donuts, soft drinks, jam, jellies, and sugary breakfast cereals are easy to spot. What can be much more difficult is spotting the sugar in foods that we don’t necessarily associate with having large amounts of sugar. Foods like salad dressings, mayonnaise (especially the “low-fat” varieties), barbecue sauce, and ketchup can be high in sugar. Pre-made meals and frozen pizzas with a three-percent or more sugar content can also be problematic. And, of course, these foods are only the tip of the iceberg.
It seems like more and more of the food we consume on a daily basis has a sugar content that is not only discouraged, but warned against by the medical community at large. Sugar is often warned against not only because of its link to cancer, but because it contains no vitamins or minerals (i.e., it’s just empty calories), it harms your cholesterol and Triglyceride levels, it causes insulin resistance, and it raises the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.[Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images]
