Aaron Gordon only looked like he was leaping off a trampoline in Saturday’s NBA slam dunk contest.
These members of Liberty University’s SOAR ministry dunk team actually were, and their display of air-time reached its crescendo with a backboard crushing slam.
A trick dunk group that uses trampolines shattered a backboard during its routine.
After six jumpers passed the ball off the backboard to one another in the air, the finisher put the ball between his legs and slammed it home, smashing the glass backboard in the process.
Backboard shattering dunks have a treasured history in the NBA, and the league had to introduce breakaway rims because Darryl Dawkins was endangering players by frequently bringing down the backboard. Shaquille O’Neal was also famous for his losing battles with the rim.
The SOAR dunk team, which is open about their religious faith, performs for local youth groups and at school assemblies and sporting events.
Aaron Gordon skied above the Orlando Magic mascot in Saturday’s NBA slam dunk contest.
“SOAR is not afraid of flying high above the rim, nor boldly sharing their faith in Jesus Christ while using their own worship style,” the team’s website says.
