Ronnie Brown signs with Chargers, gains fantasy status

The Chargers have re-signed a familiar face in the wake of injury troubles in the backfield. We break down the fantasy implications.

San Diego Chargers running back Ronnie Brown re-signed with the team on Tuesday, according to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego. Brown appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers last season and rushed for 157 yards and one touchdown on 45 carries.

Fantasy Impact: Brown is returning to the Chargers due to a handful of injuries that have decimated the Chargers’ lineup. Donald Brown (concussion), Ryan Mathews (sprained knee) and Danny Woodhead (knee) are all out for the foreseeable future.

Although Brown will suddenly have the potential to be pushed into a running back-by-committee situation, it’s likely that Branden Oliver will get the majority of the touches against the Oakland Raiders in Week 6. Oliver managed 182 total yards and a pair of touchdowns on 23 touches in the team’s Week 5 win over the New York Jets.

Oliver’s outstanding performance likely leaves Brown as more of a pass blocker than a go-to option for fantasy owners at the moment.
