We’ve all been there — you watch your calories and are almost excited to step on the scale, only to feel the disappointment when you don’t lose any weight or worse, you gained weight for the week. It is a terrible feeling when you feel like you are doing all the right things, only to learn that you need to do more to shed the extra pounds.

Huffington Post stated it isn’t uncommon to see a slow down or even a stop to your weight loss results after you lose 20 percent of your body. Typically, your body usually doesn’t want to lose any weight; you have to trick it at times to let go of the extra pounds. There is hope, though, as there are things you can do to ensure that you do reach your fitness goals. However, it’ll take some effort on your part.

As Inquisitr reported on Sunday, diet soda is the one drink that can reduce your chances of reaching your weight loss goals. Not only is the drink extremely unhealthy, but it also promotes belly fat. Many fitness trainers swear that if you put the soda down, you can lose up to ten pounds in a couple of weeks time, without changing your diet at all.

Dehydration is a significant problem in the U.S. and nutritionists believe that if you replace the diet soda with water, it’ll help you shed the extra weight. There is a debate about the best way to stop drinking diet soda — gradual or cold turkey — however, all health professionals agree that it isn’t important how you stop drinking it, just find a way to quit.

AJCN notes that many people are so concerned with the mentality calories in versus calories out that they forget to check how much carbohydrates and sugar they consume. For example, if you start the day with a sweetened meal like a sweetened cereal or oatmeal, chances are you will set the tone for the whole day and eat more sugar than you intended. Instead, it is recommended you omit as much sugar as you can from your diet, and eat eggs, bacon (or other protein, with one slice of toast and a small (4oz) serving of fruit. Try it a few weeks and watch the pounds drop off.

Many people are programmed to ignore stress and push through, thinking eventually it’ll work itself out. While that may be true, stress still affects how you handle your diet, exercise, and mental status. So, it is vital that you treat yourself right, and take note of times that you are particularly stressed. Not only will it make you feel better, but it will also help you push through your weight loss plateau.

If you are feeling stressed, chances are you aren’t sleeping well. Sleep is the one thing that can actually affect your weight loss efforts. A recent study found that those who skipped out on getting at least seven hours of sleep a night were 40 percent more likely to be overweight/obese. For this reason, activity trackers that record sleep patterns became such a hot ticket. Scientists firmly believe that to lose weight effectively, it is critical to manage your stress and get enough rest.

It is easy to underestimate how many calories you consume, especially if you drink wine or other mixed drink. In fact, alcohol is one of the main reasons why weight loss stalls. For the time being, it is best to either carefully consume the liquor you drink or omit it from your diet until you reach your weight loss goals. Each glass of wine has a minimum of 120 calories. Let’s assume you go out to drink with your friends and drink three to four glasses. That could be almost 500 calories, plus the calories from the food you consumed. It could be enough to wreck your diet for the day.
