Clinton groups half of Trump's supporters in deplorable 'basket'

When Hillary Clinton takes a look at Donald Trump’s supporters, she sees half of them as a basket of nuts.

Clinton ripped 50% of Trump supporters during a LGBT fundraiser in lower Manhattan Friday evening, grouping them into a “basket of deplorables.”

“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Clinton said to laughter from the “LGBT for Hillary” crowd. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it.”

The other half, Clinton said, are disillusioned Americans who feel the “government has let them down.”

"The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it," Clinton said to laughs.

“Those are people we have to understand and empathize with,” she said.

Trump took to Twitter to defend his fans — and fire back at Clinton.

“Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of amazing, hard working people,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “I think it will cost her at the Polls!”

“Given that there’s been entire books dedicated to Hillary’s deplorable actions it’s a new low, even for her, to attack 100,000,000 Americans,” he added in a second tweet.

Clinton has used the “deplorables” line in the past, usually to condemn the largely online-based alt-right movement, which has well-documented ties to white supremacism and anti-Semitic beliefs.

“(Trump) tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric,” Clinton told the enthusiastic crowd.

Some of Trump’s surrogates were quick to condemn Clinton’s “basket” comment.

The Republican frontrunner’s newly appointed campaign manager called Clinton “#desperate” in a late night tweet.

“One day after promising to be aspirational & uplifting, Hillary insults millions of Americans,” Kellyanne Conway said.

Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller echoed Conway’s sentiment and quickly issued a blistering statement on Clinton’s remarks.

“Just when Hillary Clinton said she was going to start running a positive campaign, she ripped off her mask and revealed her true contempt for everyday Americans,” Miller said.
